South Salt Lake City and the PAL (Police Athletics/Activities League) Pete Suazo Boxing Center asked Carbon Architects to revitalize a portion of the old Woodrow Wilson Elementary school and turn it into a facility for their youth program and boxing gym. Recognizing the challenges of limited public funds, Carbon’s design capitalized on the historic features of the building to invoke the look and feel of a traditional training gym, which was accomplished by removing an existing lay-in ceiling, exposing the original structure and roof decking, while adding a small addition to provide space for the boxing ring and let in some much needed natural light. The resulting facility provides a great space for youth/athletes and stands at the heart of future neighborhood revitalization efforts.
